Description
Queens County: A History in Pictures offers the definitive look at the county and its people. Since 1929, the Queens County Historical Society has been collecting photographs of the people, industry, landscapes and events of Queens County. To date, the collection contains more than 40,000 photographs and thousands of artifacts.
Over the years, many historical figures, including baseball legend Babe Ruth, renowned author Zane Grey, and famed Chicago financier Thomas Howell, have come to fish, hunt and discover the riches of the area's land and sea. This collection captures that history like never before. You can almost hear the call of the wild and the roar of the ocean.
About the authors
Kathleen Stitt has a great love for history and its stories of real people and their communities. She started her dream career in museums 28 years ago when she began working as a heritage interpreter and researcher, first at the Simeon Perkins House Museum, and then at the Queens County Museum. Born in Halifax, she moved to Queens County as a child. She has an undergraduate degree in English and history from Saint Mary's University.
Bestselling author Vernon Oickle has 17 books to his credit and is an international award winning journalist and editor with 33 years experience working in community newspapers on Nova Scotia’s South Shore. Among his many awards for writing and photography is the Golden Quill Award for best editorial writing from the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors. Winning the award in 2012, Vernon is only the third Canadian and the first Nova Scotian to win this honour since it was first presented in 1961. In addition to his newspaper career, he is the author of 21 books. Vernon and his wife Nancy have two sons, Kellen and Colby. He continues to reside in Liverpool where he was born and raised.
Linda Rafuse was born in Toronto, but has spent most of her life in Milton, Nova Scotia. She is a graduate of Liverpool Regional High School and in 1986 joined the Queens County Museum and the Queens County Historical Society as a volunteer, all because of her love of history and genealogy. She has been the director of the museum since the mid-1990s.
Editorial Reviews
DELIGHTFUL
"This commemorative volume, showcasing Queens County through archival photographs, is a vivid and delightful way (and one of the strongest methods) of conveying local history. It's so important to keep this knowledge alive." —Ruth Holmes Whitehead, ONS, author of The Old Man Told Us
KEEPER
"A picture is, indeed, worth a thousand words. The breadth and depth of the images in this work do justice to those who came before us and whose cumulative effort is enjoyed by today's residents. This book is a 'keeper' by every measure." —Hon. John G. Leefe DCL, author of Atlantic Privateers
