Description

Susan's father is a lobster fisherman in the Northumberland Strait, and one Saturday morning he lets Susan come on the boat with him. They empty their traps together and Susan sees all different sea creatures- rock crabs, sculpins, and more. Wonderfully illustrated in vibrant colours by Brenda Jones, Lobster Fishing on the Susan B has a simple storyline and incorporates information about lobster fishing and marine life.

About the authors

Biography: Maureen Hull was born and raised on Cape Breton Island. She studied at nscad, Dalhousie University and the Pictou Fisheries School. She has worked at the costume department of Neptune Theatre and as a lobster fisher. She lives on Pictou Island in the Northumberland Strait. Her fiction and poetry have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, most recently Christmas Family Treasures. Her short story collection, Righteous Living, was short-listed for the Danuta Gleed Award, and several of her stories have been read on CBC Radio.

Brenda Jones has spent years roaming the woods and fields across Canada, gathering and studying the herbs that live here in order to better understand the properties of these amazing plants. With a background as an artist and illustrator, she began painting each herb in detail to help with identification, and eventually published her first herb book, Medicinal Herbs of Eastern Canada. She has now completed the Western version, and continues to expand her own backyard herb garden, filling her cupboards with tinctures, oils, and herbal teas.

Lobster Fishing on the Sea

Susan’s father, a Northumberland Strait lobster fisherman, lets Susan come on the boat with him one Saturday. As they empty their trawls together, Susan gets to see and touch all kinds of sea creatures and learns how to empty, haul and bait the trawls. Back at the wharf, they sell their catch to a fish buyer and then return home to a dinner of lobster chowder.
