Description
Milton the washing machine and W. P. (Whirlpool) the dryer are being delivered to a new home in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. The pair are excited to start their new jobs in the Crosby home, and are just getting settled in to the basement when “the kid” comes home from school. Sidney straps on a pair of Rollerblades, drags out a beat-up hockey net, and starts to practice. Every now and then a loud carrong echoes off W. P.’s shiny white enamel as the puck misses the net, prompting scolds from Sidney’s mother upstairs.
Eventually, the poor dryer needs to be replaced; it’s missing knobs and covered in dents. W. P. doesn’t want to go, and it’s up to Sidney to convince his dad that sometimes, being reminded of your mistakes is a good thing.
An imaginative interpretation of the history of Sidney Crosby’s famous dryer (now a popular attraction at the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame), paired with vibrant artwork from award-winning illustrator Brenda Jones, Sid the Kid and the Dryer will have young readers and sports fans cheering from the sidelines.
About the authors
No one has a clearer view of Atlantic Canada's literary endeavours over the past twenty years than Lesley Choyce. He is the founder of the literary journal Pottersfield Portfolio, and the publisher of Pottersfield Press. He has edited several fiction anthologies and has been the in-house editor of many books from Pottersfield Press including Making Waves, a collection of stories by emerging authors from Atlantic Canada. He is the author of more than fifty books in genres ranging from poetry and essays to autobiography, history and fiction for adults, young adults, and children. Among his recent books are the novels The Republic of Nothing, World Enough, and Cold Clear Morning, and the story collection Dance the Rocks Ashore. Choyce is the writer, host, and co-producer of the popular literary show television program, Off the Page with Lesley Choyce, which is broadcast across the country on Vision TV. He also teaches in the English department of Dalhousie University in Halifax and is leader of the rock band The Surf Poets.
Brenda Jones has spent years roaming the woods and fields across Canada, gathering and studying the herbs that live here in order to better understand the properties of these amazing plants. With a background as an artist and illustrator, she began painting each herb in detail to help with identification, and eventually published her first herb book, Medicinal Herbs of Eastern Canada. She has now completed the Western version, and continues to expand her own backyard herb garden, filling her cupboards with tinctures, oils, and herbal teas.
