Striking Impressive
Flip Turn is a strikingly impressive surprise. Paula Eisenstein's story of an unusually turbulent coming of age is told with a sense of urgency, a need to be heard. What price the sacrifice to normal, after big brother is guilty of murder in the community where you live and grow? The informal structure and language convey the plot in impressionistic episodes. The most striking element, and one that grips the reader from first line, is the authentic voice of the narrator. The adolescent perspective is keen and honest throughout and the language rich with insight and poetry as observations of events and people, nice and otherwise’ are presented. A highly recommendable ‘must read’!Flip Turn
Wow! This book is an amazing window on so many different experiences: competitive swimming, politics, living with a lesbian mother, and especially a teenager grappling the death of a girl caused by her brother. The author very powerfully helps us feel the experience indirectly as the main character tries to carry on with her life. This angle on homicide is not often taken and it is an important one to consider. Poetically written and a very valuable first novel from this new author!
