Books by and about Jane Austen
The Canadian Jane Austen: here are the classic Austen novels in beautifully produced scholarly editions, along with some excellent criticism of Austen’s novels, and a fun new take on Jane Austen for kids. The Broadview Literary Texts editions of Jane Austen’s novels are satisfyingly serious-looking, unlike some other editions that make the books look like light romances. The late Bruce Stovel wrote many excellent essays on Austen’s work, which are collected in Jane Austen & Company, and several Austen scholars contributed essays to Jane Austen Sings the Blues, a book that celebrates Stovel’s work as a teacher and Austen scholar, and his love of blues music. Stovel and Lynn Weinlos Gregg co-edited The Talk in Jane Austen, which, despite the vacant expression the woman on its cover wears, is a fascinating and highly intelligent collection of essays on Austen’s use of dialogue. Cozy Classics: Pride and Prejudice is not exactly by or about Jane Austen, but it’s a cute way to introduce her most famous novel to very young children.
