This gorgeously illustrated picture book is dedicated to the wild horses of the Nemaiah Valley, one of the last pristine places left for wild horses of the rugged north mountain country. Award-winning author and illustrator Georgia Graham went there to look for the horses in the middle of May when they were still low in the hills searching for the first blades of spring grass. There she found fourbands, each led by a stallion rippling with muscles and jealously protecting his mares. There were very few foals because their predators are many.
Where Wild Horses Run tells a moving story of how one band of horses grouped together as family to protect a vulnerable colt from cougars - a story of love and dedication that will ultimately inspire children with the hope that there are still truly wild places in this world worth our protection.
About the author
Georgia Graham has been a compulsive drawer ever since she was a child growing up in Calgary, Alberta. She graduated from the Alberta College of Art in 1982 where she majored in Visual Communications. She has written and illustrated Cub's Journey Home, Where Wild Horses Run, The Lime Green Secret, A Team Like No Other, and The Strongest Man This Side of Cremona. She has illustrated many children's books by other authors.
Georgia lives with her husband on a small farm on the edge of Lacombe, Alberta. Her grown children and granddaughter live near by.

Georgia Graham is an artist of extraordinary diversity in style, as can be seen in her two latest books — both of which have much to offer.First up is Where Wild Horses Run, dedicated to the wild horses of Nemaiah Valley, BC. One spring, Graham was able to observe four bands of the wild animals in the rugged mountain country. Here, she has captured the life of one band — the stallion, the mares and a recently born foal — as they look for spring grass and keep Brown Foal safe from the many predators that threaten her.
In this book, as in many of her previous works (such as The Strongest Man in Cremona and A Team Like No Other), Graham adopts a realistic style that beautifully captures the muscular bodies of the horses, the greens and browns of the landscape. Within this style, her work has traditionally incorporated strong horizontal lines. Here we see the long sweep of the mountain range in the background, the string of horses as they pick their way along the narrow river valley that stretches across the two-page spread, and even the long body of the grizzly bear that lurks among the trees watching Brown Foal, his potential meal.
