Description
While Donna Sinclair explores the beauty of our gardens and the deeply spiritual lessons they can teach, she awakens us to a deep love and compassion for planet earth as a whole. The result is a powerful expression of our sacred connection with the natural world, a book from which both the experienced and the novice gardener will find inspiration.
About the author
Donna Sinclair travelled widely internationally and throughout Canada for 27 years as an award-winning journalist with The United Church Observer (renamed Broadview in 2019). Now retired, she continues to write occasionally for various publications. Over the last decade, she and her husband, Jim, have devoted much of their time to caring for their grandchildren and the world they inhabit. Her most recent book is Activist Alphabet (Wood Lake Publishing).
Editorial Reviews
"We garden for our soul's sake," surmises author Donna Sinclair. "If it was just about burning calories, we could walk for an hour each day and save all the money we spend on shovels, new plants and manure." In The Spirituality of Gardening, Sinclair develops a seven-chapter taxonomy of gardening as spirituality – gardening as connection, balance, memory, healing, hope, spiritual practice and resistance. All chapters blend religious text, personal anecdote, thoughtful quotes, pictures and garden wisdom. Well-written and insightful, this book may be used as a discussion-provoking text for religion, environmental literature, writing or similar courses, and as a source of inspiration or reflection for gardening clubs and co-ops. The book also includes a "History of Gardening Timeline" that is potentially useful in upper elementary through high school classrooms, nature centers, and other gardening education programs.
