In 2016, the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre—‘The Janeway’ to most—celebrated 50 years of operation. For 43 of those years, Dr. Rick Cooper has been a pediatrician at the hospital, helping thousands of sick children from across Newfoundland and Labrador. This book peels back the hospital curtains and peeks through the ward doors, introducing readers to the many people who have worked at this unique hospital. It also delves into the fight to build the original Janeway at a time of bleak provincial finances, and follows its evolution into a leading modern teaching hospital, responsible for elevating the standard of health care up to or surpassing national levels.

Dr. Rick Cooper has spent much of his career as a teaching physician and practicing pediatrician at the Janeway Hospital in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He retired as a faculty member of Memorial University’s medical school in 2011. He is a Professor Emeritus.

Dr. Cooper is a multiple recipient of the Silver Orator Award, which is given to the professor who has provided the best lectures with respect to content, style, humour, and aptness.

Dr. Cooper has also been awarded the Royal College Mentor of the Year for Atlantic Canada, the Dr. Craig Loveys Teaching Award, and is a recipient of the Royal College Specialist of the Year Award for Atlantic Canada.
