Description
The History of the RCMP Marine Services is a compendium of historic vessels. These craft range from the early days of the Northwest Mounted Police vessels used through the ages up to present-day RCMP operations. Notes on the ownership and transference of the vessels includes data that reveals where the vessels operated as well as their place of construction. The book features vessels throughout Canada, traded between services, including the Coast Guard and the Navy in peace times and during the war.
A special feature of this book is the coverage of the St Roch II (Nadon) “Voyage of Rediscovery” in 2000, which circumnavigated North America.
This is a book for anyone who loves boats and their history. It will have a special appeal to mariners in the services, commercial operators, recreational boaters and Canadiana enthusiasts.
About the authors
Cst. Kenneth Haycock was born in Woodstock, Ontario, in 1951. His interest in historical research and genealogy was influenced by his grandparents. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a radio operator in 1970 and was transferred to the west coast of Canada to CFB Esquimalt and eventually to HMCS Terra Nova. He left the armed forces and in 1988 joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He served mainly in the detachments of the Lower Mainland of BC. In 1998 he had the opportunity to join the RCMP Patrol Vessel Lindsay in Vancouver and in 2000 was transferred to the newly organized RCMP Marine Services in Nanaimo, BC. It was during some research into past vessels of the RCMP that it became apparent there was no single source of information for the huge and important contribution that Marine Services have made to the RCMP. With the assistance of members of the force and other services, he compiled this history, list and details of vessels used by the RCMP since the March West.
