Description

This monograph comprehensively presents Simcoe County artist Joanna McEwen's eight-year project (2004 - 2011) portraying the interiors of the numerous small rural churches that dot the Township of Oro-Medonte in a series of fifty-two egg tempera panels. In recent years, several of these congregations have shuttered, closing a historical passage that dates to the settlement of the County in the mid-19th century. Illustrations of the complete series at actual panel size are supplemented by essays by the artist (also a noted regional historian) and Toronto writer Andrea Curtis, who grew up in Barrie.
