Description
Science gets the stitched treatment in this stunning science book from textile artist Lauren Wright Vartanian. During the pandemic, Lauren started stitching an ABC book of science, but it soon became clear that some of the topics she was exploring were too advanced for your average toddler. Out of this was born Stitching Science, a book for any person who loves science, art and how the two intersect.
Scientific topics ranging from Atom to Zenith come to life at the end of Lauren's skilled needle, and lively and informative text by Keltie Thomas explains key concepts and delivers interesting facts for each subject.
Readers will explore topics in physics, biology, chemistry, astronomy, mathematics and more, such as:
- B is for Black hole
- D is for DNA
- F is for Fractal and Fibonacci Numbers
- L is for Lichen
- O is for Organ
- Q is for Quantum
- T is for Triceratops and Tyrannosaurs
- W is for Weather.
Lauren's meticulous textile artworks are sure to enchant readers, and the art has been expertly scanned to best show the painstaking detail and skill she applied to each panel.
Stitching Science is a charming and informative introduction to a wide variety of scientific concepts as well as a beautiful art book from a talented textile artist.

Editorial Reviews
"Comprised of a deft blending of science, science history, and needlecrafting, "Stitching Science: Exploring Science from A-Z" offers a unique, unusual, but quite effective introduction to science through illustrative needlecrafting. This hard cover picture book style volume from Firefly Books is especially and unreservedly recommended for personal, family, middle school, high school, and community library Science and Needlecraft collections for ages 12-18."
Midwest Book Review
This is a book that is a wonderful blend of science and art... The detailed embroideries are photographed very well, with large pages and clear, crisp photos that let you see the elements of each one. There is even a section at the end of closeups of some of the smaller details so you can really appreciate the handwork ... I hope that reading this will spur interest among readers in both science and in embroidery. I think it's a gorgeous read that shows how well science and art work together to educate and inspire.

Vartanian illustrates her nearly three dozen ideas and objects with beautiful handmade textile artwork, like squares in a quilt made especially for Neil deGrasse Tyson. Some of the images are deceptively simple and beguiling, while others are quite complex. All are beautiful and fascinating in their own right, and the sheer amount of work that went into each is impressive.
