Description

What's the most important thing to remember when making pepper steak? Can a man ever possibly accomplish the task of changing all three diapers of his triplets in one evening? What is the perfect age to learn how to drive in Saskatchewan? Can a person actually lose weight on a mini-Oh Henry Halloween diet? And is it possible to attend the Grey Cup in Regina and not end up loving everybody? Running of the Buffalo is a hilarious collection of 70 columns written by Ron Petrie, humour columnist for the Regina Leader-Post. Knowing diddly doots about many things, Ron spent 20 years poking fun at relationships, sex, sports, parenthood, aging and all things related to growing up in Saskatchewan. A man for all seasons, outstanding in his field, Ron Petrie's unique view of the world will make you giggle, guffaw, chortle and snort.

About the authors

Contributor Notes

Ron Petrie was born in Preeceville, Saskatchewan; raised on a farm near Lintlaw, Saskatchewan; attended high school in Kelvington Saskatchewan; and was the student editor of the University of Saskatchewan Sheaf before working at the Post-Review in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, the Times-Herald in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and, eventually, the Leader-Post, in Regina, Saskatchewan. Yeah, a bit of a recurring theme there. Ron and his wife Joan live in Regina (Saskatchewan) with their four children, only three of whom are triplets. He likes pie.

Pepper Steak Too Hot To Handle
Saturday evening at Third Page Boy’s Kitchen, we tested a
recipe that is not only quick and tasty, but also, if prepared as
directed, excruciating in a way that half of you can’t begin to
fathom:
THIRD PAGE BOY’S PEPPER STEAK
1 kg. beef steak
1 medium onion
1 green pepper, 1 red pepper and just for fun, or so you
thought while rooting through the supermarket’s produce
section, one (1) of those tiny exotic orange peppers with which you’ve never cooked, but what’s life without the spice of variety? Besides, the wee beggars were only 16 cents apiece.
Cut beef steak into strips. Fry in cooking oil until brown.
Chop onion, green pepper and red pepper. Chop orange
pepper. Sample onion, green pepper and red pepper.
Approach testing of orange pepper with trepidation. Shave
off a tiny sliver and apply to tip of tongue.
Give head a shake. Stomp around kitchen like one of the
Three Stooges doing the watusi while making “woo-woo-woo” noises. Fan tip of tongue with hand. Consume two glasses of cold water. Contemplate whether orange pepper too hot for toddlers in household. Think to ask wife.
Shave second sliver of orange pepper and present on
fingertip to unsuspecting wife in other room. Tell wife pepper
tastes mild and sweet, much like cantaloupe.Avoid snickering.
Observe wife’s eyes go ba-bing! Enjoy belly laugh. Ha-ha!
Chortle, guffaw, titter and hoot like big wacky humourist...

Editorial Reviews

“Whether confusing ‘Viterra’ with ‘Viagra’, or ‘swingers’ with ‘dancers’, Petrie's humour is always self-directed and is never judgmental. Well. It's not judgmental against anyone but the author himself. Do yourself a favour, and pick up a copy of Running of the Buffalo by Regina Leader-Post's foremost humour columnist, Ron Petrie. You won't be disappointed. You might not even be able to stand up when you're done reading the book, but that's hardly the fault of the writer, is it?”
