About the authors
Winn Braun currently works with struggling readers and writers, and with ESL students. She has taught grades 1 to 6 in Calgary, Alberta. She is co-author, with her father, of four Readers Theatre books and is committed to the concept of interactive reading as being integral to language learning. During her two years as an English instructor at the West China Medical University and Luzhou Medical College, PRC, Readers Theatre was a popular medium for language learning, especially among the medical students. Winn’s article, “A First-Grade Teacher Talks to Parents,” published by Heinemann, won high acclaim in the New York Sunday Times. She currently lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Scrabble games, puzzle adventure books, and visits to the public library keep her and her two children, Tyler and Mikala, immersed in the world of literacy.
Carl Braun is professor emeritus of applied psychology at the University of Calgary. His professional work includes classroom teaching at all levels, and research and teaching in both Canadian and American universities. His career path reflects a lifelong passion for the study of reading/language learning, especially by struggling students, and a growing interest in the link between language learning and the arts. He is a past president of the International Reading Association, and he was a member of the International Task Force on Literacy and consultant to the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of the Child. Dr. Braun is the author of numerous publications, including four Readers Theatre books co-authored with his daughter, Winn Braun. He holds an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Manitoba, and he is a member of the IRA Reading Hall of Fame.
