Painted Lives & Shifting Landscapes showcases the artwork of Vancouver painter, printmaker and muralist Richard Tetrault. Tetrault's work explores universal themes of the figure and the urban landscape. From Berlin to Bangkok to Vancouver, his artwork revisits these themes over thirty years. His imagery is at its most direct in street drawings and paintings, more symbolic in monoprints and studio work, and most iconic in woodcuts and linocuts. While Tetrault's studio work reflects the urban setting, his murals are a direct attempt to influence the physical texture of the street. Numerous mural projects and collaborations bring the artist face-to-face with the edginess and the creative spirit of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

Richard Tetrault has received numerous grants for his exhibits and public projects, including a five-month residency in Germany, a Canada Council Grant for an exhibition in Asia, support for touring exhibitions in Mexico and Africa, and grants for mural collaborations and workshops. These murals are visible throughout the Vancouver area, in community centres, public housing developments, banks, and schools. Tetrault's artwork (in full colour) is showcased in Anvil Press's Painted Lives and Shifting Landscapes, and in Signs of the Times (black and white wood prints)?which also features the poetry of Bud Osborn.

In Pamela Fairfield's most recent collaboration with Richard Tetrault, she combines her roles as writer, artist and curator with her thirteen years of work in the community of the Downtown Eastside. She wishes to thank the residents of the Portland Hotel Society whose lives are an exemplary blend of beauty and strength and who together have been the muse that has inspired the writing of Painted Lives and Shifting Landscapes.

Jim Green is a long-time activist and advocate for the Downtown Eastside and founded the Four Corners Community Savings bank. He was the provincial lead on the Federal Homelessness Initiative and has developed over sixty million in social housing including the Four Sisters Co-op. He is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia and co-founded UBC Anthropology's Urban Field School. Green also teaches opera and architecture classes for Humanities 101.
