Description

Recorded to accompany the print edition, Motion in Poetry - The Audio Xperience, is the sound of dub poetry alive and in front of an audience. Motion tells her powerful stories of identity, strength, and place, to put a voice to the face, and sounds to the words. Motion in Poetry charts a journey in language that is rich in contemporary African-Canadian rhythms. Invoking the spirit of Toronto's dub poet legends, Brathwaite makes a name for herself within the spoken word vernacular, while in other poems, strict, Standard English is put to the service of her unique and powerful storytelling. Motion in Poetry reads like a swaying ride through life, love, raw desire, political irony, fiery emotions about race, class and gender, touching sadness and sweet, dry humour. -Bonus Track- "connect the t.dots," winner of the first annual CBC Poetry Face-Off.

Editorial Reviews

"The eternal wail of woman story permeates the lyrics of Motion's poetry. Her seat is Toronto but her vision ranges across the expanse of the African Diaspora, and like the shamaness Madame Laveau she incants tales of loss, rage, sorrow, healing, love, and power. Motion's work has the ethereal quality of a Dionne Brand and the immediacy of an Amiri Baraka. Thus, in the tradition of her ancestor poets, Motion uses poetry to transform the world. For me, it was sheer joy to read this volume." — Afua Cooper, author of Copper Woman and Other Poems and The Hanging of Angélique
