Description

Ever since the Canadian prairies were first settled and the Mounties marched west to establish and maintain law and order, the names of individual officers have left their mark on the national landscape. Their long tradition has been honoured in many of the place names of Canada, especially in the West.

In this collection, over 250 of the NWMP, RNWMP and RCMP members who died while on duty, or who enjoyed long or extraordinary careers, are remembered. Other place names are connected to a Mountie-related event or were named by a pioneering Mountie in honour of some significant occurrence.

Authors William "Bill" Hulgaard and John "Jack" White, both retired Mounties, extended their research across Canada to compile the information for Honoured in Places.

About the authors

Staff Sergeant William J. Hulgaard, retired, served in the RCMP from 1952 to 1989. He was first posted on the 1953 Musical Ride, performing in eastern Canadian cities and in New York City. In his early career he was a motorcycle instructor. He escorted numerous dignitaries and was personally presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh. Following a career on highway patrol, William was traffic supervisor for the Province of British Columbia during his last year of service. He was awarded the RCMP Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with Gold Clasp. Following his retirement, he travelled thousands of kilometres visiting the old Mounted Police historic sites in the western provinces, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

Chief Superintendent John W. White, retired, served in the RCMP from 1950 to 1985 in "E" Division (British Columbia) and "B" Division (Newfoundland). In 1962, he was one of many to respond to the murder of three RCMP members at Kamloops, BC, resulting in a shoot out with the assailant and a Commissioner's Commendation for White. He was also awarded the Canada Centennial Medal in 1967, a second Commendation for a murder investigation in 1968, the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 1977, and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with Gold Clasp. After he retired, he began compiling service histories of all Force members since 1873, now a valuable resource for historians. "My co-author, Bill Hulgaard, and I have not forgotten the unending search of history. In our continuing search, we have compiled over 100 additional items, some not previously found while others were named for members and events since the publication of our book." -John White, December 2009
