Description
Young children will delight in the humor of this rhyming cumulative tale that describes how a little brown mouse encourages Emily, who is distressed by the creaks and squeaks in her house, to fill it with a variety of animals -- a tabby cat, a puppy dog, a black sheep, a billy goat, a brown cow and a turtle dove. As a result the house becomes increasingly noisy and chaotic, but in the end, the little brown mouse saves the day.
Joanne Fitzgerald's gentle watercolor illustrations, rich in detail, enhance the story's repetitive rhymes.
About the authors
Niko Scharer has a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto and teaches philosophy at York University and the University of Toronto. The inspiration for Emily's House came to her when she was reading an old Jewish folk tale (No More Room) while teaching nursery school. She is also the author of Looking for Holes and Other Poems, illustrated by Gary Clement.
Joanne Fitzgerald was a very talented illustrator who had a rewarding and prolific career in children's books. She illustrated many well-loved titles, such as The Little Rooster and the Diamond Button (winner of the Mr. Christie's Book Award) and Ten Small Tales by Celia Barker Lottridge, and Emily's House by Niko Scharer. Emily’s House
Emily is distressed by the creaks and squeaks in her house, so a little brown mouse persuades her to fill it with a variety of animals — a tabby cat, a puppy dog, a black sheep, a billy goat, a brown cow and a turtle dove. The house becomes increasingly noisy and chaotic, but in the end, the little brown mouse saves the day.
