Librarian Reviews

Campfire Morgan (First Novels)

Formac Publishing has issued almost 40 titles in their distinctively packaged First Novels series. Nineteen different characters (Mooch, Maddie, Fred, etc.) each have their own sub-series. One of the most enjoyable is Ted Staunton’s series of books about Morgan and Aldeen Hummel, the Godzilla of Grade Three. Though Morgan boasts in this latest installment that he’s going on a camping trip with his parents, he has definite reservations about the whole idea. Staunton throws in the whole camping experience— from the highlights: campfires, singsongs and toasted marshmallows, to the “squishy bits”: baiting a hook for fishing, mosquitoes, black dark and stinky outhouses. Add to this the fact that Aldeen, an unwelcome guest to begin with, proves herself a competent camper, and you have the elements of a great story. In one of the best scenes, Morgan attempts to scare Aldeen with a classic ghost story (replete with thumps and sssslups) and only manages to frighten himself.

Staunton is a master not only of revealing Morgan’s inner thoughts, but in capturing the dynamics between Morgan and his friends. A musician and author who does lots of school visits, Staunton seems well in touch with his young audience. Bill Slavin’s funny, loose black-and-white illustrations are just the right match for Staunton’s snappy dialogue and wild sound effects.
