Librarian Reviews

Baby’s Lullaby

Baby’s Lullaby is based on the song “Lay Down” by Jill Barber — Juno Award-nominated singer-songwriter — with cartoon-style illustrations by HildaRose. This beautiful new book is a must-have for little ones who like to be sung to sleep. Jill Barber wrote “Lay Down” for Nova Scotia’s Read-to-Me! program, which sees every newborn child in that province receive a literacy bag containing books and a CD of songs and rhymes. In the first spread, a human mother and her child are preparing for bed. This is followed by illustrations of owls, geese, otters, fish, raccoons and squirrels cuddling their offspring as they nod off to sleep. The final spread shows the child with eyes closed, resting peacefully in mother’s arms — creating a lovely image for a child to fall asleep to. I liked the line “But when the sun meets the horizon I’ll be by your side” as it reassures youngsters that they can enter the world of dreams knowing mom or dad will always be there for them. The simple rhyming text coupled with HildaRose’s bold illustrations should appeal to youngsters and not just at naptime or bedtime. A video of Jill singing “Lay Down” can be found on YouTube and if you visit www.zunior.com/redeem.php and enter “jillbarber” you can redeem a free song download of “Lay Down” — an added little bonus with the purchase of the book.
