About the authors

Jalal Shamsie, MD, FRCP(C), is the Director and the Founder of the Institute for the study of Antisocial behaviour in Youth (IAY). The Institute was started in 1987 with the support of the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services. He is also a professor of psychiatry at the University of Toronto; a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; and a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of U.K.

Dr. Shamsie is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and has worked with children and adolescents with behaviour problems for over 38 years. He has written 6 books and over 25 articles in professional journals. He has also been a consultant to training schools for boys and girls. In 1963, he opened the first adolescent unit in Canada devoted to the treatment of antisocial youth.

Joanne Lawrence is the Associate Director/Editor for the Institute for the study of Antisocial behaviour in Youth (IAY). Joanne has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from York University in Toronto, Ontario and is currently involved in a Postgraduate program focusing on the area of Psychosocial Rehabilitation.

Carole Hood, MDiv., MEd, PhD, is a Research Fellow with the Institute for the Study of Antisocial Behaviour in Youth and is available to consult with, or address, groups of interested professionals or government representatives. Her main focus is the problems of vulnerable children and adolescents which culminate in antisocial behaviour.
