Description

A re-issue of Tim Wynne-Jones and Eric Beddows’ classic picture book Zoom at Sea, published in celebration of Groundwood’s 35th anniversary. The enhanced epub version includes a read-aloud feature of the story narrated by Tim Wynne-Jones.

This fanciful nautical adventure stars a winsome cat named Zoom, who stays indoors paddling in the sink or sailing in the bathtub all night when other self-respecting cats are out mousing and howling at the moon.

One day Zoom finds in his Uncle Roy's diary a map of the sea and how to get there, which leads him to the huge house of the beautiful Maria. When, with the turn of a large wheel, mysterious Maria launches him on a wonderful sea voyage, the first of Zoom’s adventures begins.

Excerpt: Zoom at Sea (read by Tim Wynne-Jones; illustrated by Eric Beddows)

The Sea was not far, really. Zoom took a bus. He arrived very early in the morning, at a house with a big front door. It was so early Zoom was afraid to knock but the light was on and if he listened closely he thought he could hear someone inside. With great excitement he rapped three times.

The door opened. Before him stood a large woman in a blue dress. She wore silver earrings and many silver bracelets on her wrists.

“I want to go to sea,” said Zoom nervously.

The woman smiled, but said nothing. Zoom spoke louder.

“I’m Uncle Roy’s nephew and I want to go to sea.”

“Ahh!” said the woman, nodding her head. “Come in my little sailor.”
