Description

The RMG's interest in regional artists is strongly tied to Canadian non-objective art and modernism and to the dynamic relationship between the modern and postmodern in the continuing story of Canadian contemporary art. This exhibition of work by Bingham and Ritter is a natural corollary of our unique and special interest. The practices of Meredith Bingham and Kathleen Ritter are connected to [Durham] region through the contrast between the urban and rural that is constantly moving toward the suburban. If art is about the sensory experience, about issues of perception and a sense of phenomenon, then Bingham and Ritter's practices have much in common. However, although experiential commonality may exist, the paths to that end are quite different. While Bingham's work echoes the long tradition of modernist painting, Ritter pays homage to the shorter history of Canadian photography that burgeoned in response to modernism. Both artists display a sense of theatricality in their work.
