Description

Vancouver and Its Region is a broad-ranging account of one of the world's most spectacular and liveable metropolitan areas. It presents a finely drawn historical geography of the city and its surroundings, an incisive commentary on the contemporary city, and a valuable report on the impacts of urban growth on the biophysical environment. A unique collaborative enterprise involving nineteen members of the UBC geography department, whose expertise ranges from physical science through social science to the humanities and landscape photography, the book traces the physical, social, economic, historical, and environmental development of a relatively small but highly important area of British Columbia and Canada.

About the author

Graeme Wynn is a professor of historical geography at the University of British Columbia and editor of BC Studies. He is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Canada and lives in Vancouver.

Editorial Reviews

Let there be no doubt as to the contents of Vancouver. Every page is informative and much of it is the latest word on the subject, be it pioneer life or the biophysical environment today, which is the title of a noteworthy piece by Steyn, Bovis, North and Slaymaker. Graeme Wynn's "The Rise of Vancouver", were it published under separate covers, would be a substantial monograph.

Victoria Times-Colonist, Dec.13, 1992

The book is filled with superb photographs and drawings, and the maps used to illustrate population shifts and land use are straightforward and understandable ... Every section of the book is filled with fascinating anecdotes and good, simple writing ... Anyone with the slightest interest in Vancouver, its origins and its future, would do well to add this to their collection.
