About the authors
Heather Willms, B.A., B.Ed., M.A.Ed., is a university instructor, reading coach, and author. Her works include the well-known This Is How We Teach Reading...And It's Working!. She is an intervention teacher whose work includes mentoring, modeling, and supporting both teachers and students in grades K–8. Heather has twenty-three years of experience as a classroom, learning support, and district lead teacher. A respected literacy leader, she works as a reading consultant and coach for districts, schools, and teachers interested in shifting instruction to align with Structured Literacy and evidence-based practices.
Giacinta Alberti, B.Ed., is a K–7 learning support teacher in the Comox Valley, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. She has a teaching degree from the University of Victoria with a specialization in learning support. Giacinta has experience supporting struggling readers and developing programs and support plans for students in need, while working closely with parents and other school district professionals. She has been a highly respected educator for fifteen years and is a leader among her peers.
