Description
When he is given a special poppy, Teddy travels back in time to the trenches of World War I, then aboard a World War II ship trying to evade submarines and finally on a air force bomber on a mission. Will Teddy ever get home? Ed Butts uses historical fiction to explore issues of the present day. Sadly there is nothing new about the problems we face and the wars that result. Our ancestors faced them too and This Game of War helps kids make a connection between the past and their present. Teddy experiences the camaraderie, fear, danger and devastation of life in a war zone. He learns about the lives of the people who fought in wars and he encounters his own ancestors who unknowingly help him to survive. If kids are going to learn about war, Ed Butts believes that they should be given a complete and honest account without glorifying it.
About the author
Ed Butts loved history and adventure stories as a kid, and started writing short stories, articles, and poetry in his teens. On the rare occasions when a magazine published his work, he was overjoyed, especially when they sent him a cheque for ten dollars. Since then Ed has written books about explorers, adventurers, criminals, hidden treasure, disasters, mysteries, and daring women. He has also worked at many other jobs, including teaching at a school in the Dominican Republic for eight years. Ed lives in Guelph, Ontario, with his daughter and six-year-old grandson.
