Her poems address cultural, social, and environmental issues, relationships, and reflect on everyday life as a small-town raised, semi-nomadic, first-generation Canadian. Here are poems about holding on and letting go—of ideas, opinions, beliefs, people, places, and things.

Excerpt: The Way We Hold On (by (author) Abena Beloved Green)

I have many more questions to ask,

but our conversations have an appetite

that does not respect the body's need to sleep.

They are ill-suited for the obligations of this life—

for the 6 a.m.s, the breakfast, the ironing, the making of bed.

All there is time for is a quick morning prayer with bowed head

because Lord knows you know better

than to stay up 'til ungodly hours shadowing constellations.
