Description

The Next Day is a ground-breaking graphic novel, constructed from interviews with survivors of near-fatal suicide attempts. In this poetic and profound philosophical exploration, illustrated by acclaimed small-press legend John Porcellino ("A master at miniature poignance," Entertainment Weekly), four diverse participants each answer the same key questions about life, the decision to end it, and what comes after...The Next Day is being simultaneously developed and released as a separate interactive animated on-line experience, co-produced by the prestigious National Film Board of Canada (recipient of 70 Academy Award nominations). It is an exciting new hybrid of documentary film, animation, comic book and interactive storytelling to release in May 2011.Praise for John Porcellino:"Porcellino creates some of the most thoughtful, intelligent, sympathetic & beautiful comix in America" (TIME)"A master at miniature poignance." (Entertainment Weekly)Praise for The Next Day:"The Next Day project doesn?t sugarcoat the difficulties required to face and overcome to get to those years; instead, it shows that others -- who may be very much like you -- have managed to get there." (School Library Journal's Adult Books 4 Teens blog)"As a rule, Open Book doesn?t post reviews or recommendations, but I am going to break that rule. If you are someone who is prone to moodiness, if you sometimes feel like life has kicked your ass so hard there's no possible way you could ever recuperate, if you?ve ever felt so profoundly alone that, even for a moment, you questioned your own tangible existence -- in other words, if you're a human being -- I urge you to buy a copy of The Next Day. It is a sublimely beautiful, haunting and viscerally moving book." (Open Book Toronto)"The Next Day is intimate and accessible; it is compassionate, but unsentimental: the authors wisely don't try to suggest that everything will somehow be better in the morning. Most importantly, it may help those afflicted by mental illness realize they're not alone." (Quill and Quire)

Produced and Published by Pop SandboxWritten by Paul Peterson and Jason GilmoreIllustrated by John PorcellinoDirected by Jason GilmoreEdited by Richard PoplakWritten by a social worker and playwright, directed by a filmmaker, illustrated by an acclaimed fine artist and cartoonist, and simultaneously developed for the web by an award-winning animator and technical production team with the National Film Board of Canada, The Next Day is an exciting hybrid of documentary film, animation, comic book and interactive storytelling planned for release in May 2011.Acclaimed illustrator John Porcellino was born in Chicago, in 1968, and has been writing, drawing, and publishing minicomics, comics, and graphic novels for over twenty-five years. His celebrated self-published series King-Cat Comics, begun in 1989, has inspired a generation of cartoonists. Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man, a collection of King-Cat stories about Porcellino's experiences as a pest control worker, won an Ignatz Award in 2005, and Perfect Example, first published in 2000, chronicles his struggles with depression as a teenager. King-Cat Classix and Map of My Heart, published in 2007/2009 by Drawn & Quarterly, offer a comprehensive overview of the zine's first sixty-one issues, while Thoreau at Walden (2008) is a poetic expression of the great philosopher's experience and ideals. According to cartoonist Chris Ware, "John Porcellino's comics distill, in just a few lines and words, the feeling of simply being alive" and Entertainment Weekly proclaimed that "Porcellino is a master at miniature poignance." Porcellino's work has been translated into French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Italian, and Korean.Pop Sandbox is an award winning multimedia production and publishing company. Their inaugural release, KENK: A Graphic Portrait, is a ground-breaking 300-page journalistic comic book surrounding "the world's most prolific bicycle thief" (The New York Times) built from more 30 hours of documentary footage taken over the year leading up to his high-profile arrest. KENK was officially released in Toronto, Canada on May 6 2010 at a packed event that attracted more than 500 people during the Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival and Toronto Comic Arts Festival. It was the first graphic novel ever excerpted nationally by the Globe & Mail and the first graphic novel ever featured on the cover of Now Magazine, Canada's biggest weekly newspaper. KENK's release was prominently covered by more than 50 media across the country, including lead features on CBC Television's The National and CBC Radio's Q with Jian Ghomeshi. One month into release KENK entered second edition and was midway to becoming a national best seller. Most recently, KENK was a special presentation at the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam.
