Description

The exhibition the Insiders, curated by Jeff Nachtigall, continued the Mendel Art Gallery's commitment to representing Saskatchewan artists and art activity. The exhibition publication are representative of the important relationship between art and community and the way in which the arts can be seen as a indicator or larger social activity and change. As part of a nine-month residency with the Saskatoon Health Region, Jeff Nachtigall worked with the Sherbrooke Community Centre, a long-term care facility in Saskatoon and the City of Saskatoon to develop a studio program for the residents of Sherbrooke to visually express themselves. As Nachtigall explains, "I was not interested in teaching art classes, but in simply facilitating the creative process through self-exploration and self-discovery." Many participants were forced to rediscover and adjust to the creative process and environment as many of them had never made art before. Twelve artists were selected from dozens of participants for the exhibition whose artwork is included in this publication: Dennis Anderson, Jack Coggins, Marjorie David, Cynthia Faust, Larry Fitzpatricki, Linda Freisen, Esther, Heimbecker, Ian Huck, Matthew Proctor, Kathleen Robertson, Stuart Sherin and the late Margaret Vogelgesang. The publication includes essays by Lee Henderson and David Garneau as well as conversations with the artists—revealing the profound importance of making art.
