Excerpt: The Chronicles of a Shaman in Training: A Bone Breaker (by (author) Lana Guzman; photographs by Edgar Guzman)
Such a specialist, if that at all could be referred to as a "specialist", was usually referred to as a bone breaker. Quite simply, a chiropractor was being seen as someone who would break a person's bones to make the pain go away. As to whether the pain was actually caused by some bone-related problem or a muscle related problem was not much of anyone's concern. People made little difference between bones and muscles, but could make out if someone broke a bone mostly by the screaming from pain. Despite such a fear-provoking name, a bone breaker was a go-to specialist, especially so during a vacation. In fact, many people tried to get as much medical attention during their vacation as was possible.
