Description
An important contribution to early 20th century Canadian painting in the way that Canadian artistic responses to Post-Impressionism are surveryed, and vital links with modernism in both Europe and the United States are demonstrated. The modern is truly born, and coincident with its arrival is a burgeoning confidence in a style that is genuinely identifiable as Canadian. No longer content to follow in the wake of the Europeans and Americans, the Canadians make Post-Impressionism thier own idiom. The exhibition includes work by Tom Thomson, Emily Carr, James Wilson Morrice and A.Y. Jackson, among others.Introduction, essays and acknowledgements by Joan Murray. Translation by Simone Auger and Elizabeth Schwaiger
