Description

On February 27, 1976, Inuit Tapirisat of Canada president James Arvaluk made a presentation to the Government of Canada that contained the first formal call for the creation of a new territory to be known as Nunavut. This is the life story of Arvaluk, from his childhood at a residential school in Igloolik to his time at CBC Radio to his significant political career. Arvaluk dedicated his public life of service to the cause of social justice for Inuit and the creation of Nunavut.

Noel McDermott is a retired professor of literature at Nunavut Arctic College where he lived and taught in Inuktitut and English for thirty-five years as a classroom teacher, school principal, and lecturer in the teacher training program. He has held Teaching Appointments at many other educational institutions, including McGill University, Trent University, the University of Waterloo, Ontario, as well as at the Sami University in Kautokeino, Norway.
