Description

Step Up to Academic Reading 2e is a skills-based textbook for upper-intermediate to advanced EAP students in college and university EAP programs. It is most compatible with segregated skills programs, but can also be used in paired and integrated programs. Each chapter focuses on a particular set of reading skills - such as making predictions, differentiating between facts and opinions, and understanding the research article format - that are developed gradually through a variety of activities. Shorter readings in each chapter provide "intensive" reading opportunities to apply specific reading strategies. The final chapter contains "extensive" reading opportunities, short stories that allow students to read for enjoyment while intuitively developing their understanding of grammar, vocabulary and syntax. The six chapters contain enough content for a semester-long reading course.

Editorial Reviews

"The vocab is directly related to the chapter topic and reading strategies and therefore has more context." --Lauren McKenzie, Saint Mary's University

"It's a comprehensive textbook with lots of good readings, questions, and skills taught." --Kristibeth Kelly, Fanshawe College

"Concise overview of the steps in critical reading [and] student-centered." --Annette Aarts, College of the Rockies

"This is a good overview of the academic reading process. Students should come away with a solid sense of how to proceed when they're given a text to read." --Cyndy Reimer, Douglas College

"The instructions on how to do research and how to evaluate sources are excellent! Our students need this material in a format they can read at their own pace, rather than only hearing it once or twice in class." --Eva Sajoo, Fraser International College

"Currently teaching all of these skills [previewing, predicting, topic identification, and close reading] to my class. I wish this textbook was already published - it would have been a great resource to use right now!" --Rebekah Beepat, Humber College
