Description

Jennifer Mitton's 1992 novel Fadimatu was called "powerful," "engrossing," "richly textured," and "revealing." The eleven stories in Sleeping with the Insane portray these qualities in subtle and startling ways. Sexuality — its painful expression and equally painful suppression — is a common theme throughout this collection, a shifting ground upon which themes of compulsion, transgression, fear, and desire are played out. Readers follow Mitton into the dream-like yet very real Marseille of "A Period of Weakness," past the anonymous any-town of "Spies," or through the emphatically surreal Vancouver of "Rules for the Living," captive participants in her almost-familiar worlds.
