Description

Ruins accompanies the exhibition Ruins (of The Floating Staircase) featuring the collected and reconstructed outlines of the charred remains of Toronto artist Tom Dean’s Floating Staircase, 1978-79. After a tumultuous two year period in Toronto’s harbor, Dean finally set Floating Staircase on fire and let it burn on the water; only to return to the water’s edge over a two week period thereafter to systematically retrieve and number the remains. The catalogue, resembling a collaged scrapbook or field journal of the doomed staircase, features essays written by University of Lethbridge Art Gallery Director/Curator Josephine Mills, and University of Windsor Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Culture Lee Rodney, and a transcription of Tom Dean’s video The Floating Staircase.
