Description
Born in 1871 in Enniskillen, Ontario, R.S. (Sam) McLaughlin would become the first president of General Motors of Canada. He built his home, Parkwood, on a ten acre site in what was then north Oshawa, including what would become his famed heritage gardens. It was in Parkwood that McLaughlin began to amass his collection of Canadian art by artists such as the Group of Seven, Emily Carr, Paul Peel, Morrice Cullen and Clarence Gagnon. Many of the works were also given by McLaughlin to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Art Gallery of Ontario and to O'Neill Collegiate and Vocational Institute situated across from Parkwood. There are other works that remain in Parkwood as part of its estate. The Robert McLaughlin Gallery has brought together a selection of these works for this exhibition.
