Description
Perfect Day has six parts, reflecting a spiritual journey whose presentation shifts in tone from lightly satirical to darkly lyrical, as if the one led logically to the other. There are poems about personal relationships and social and political issues in every section, with implicit religious themes, always presented obliquely. Settings range from Toronto to BC to Nova Scotia to Peru. Day One wanders between whimsy and flippancy, though already sometimes with a shadow (blast) of sadness. Day Two remains playful but in an intellectual and moral key. The poems of Day Three are directly political and increasingly desperate. Part Four wavers then between melancholic reconciliation and the possibility of something else. Day Five starts to imagine another way of being in the world. And Day Six, initially addressing death, articulates the dawn of a more perfect day.
