Description

This module focuses on number manipulation as well as place-value recognition for numbers to 10,000. Students are presented with various opportunities to compare and order whole and rational numbers (fractions and decimals), expressing numbers in both standard and expanded notation. They also perform activities that lead to an understanding of numerator and denominator as well as the importance of one-half. Also included: materials lists activity descriptions questioning techniques problem-solving examples activity centre and extension ideas assessment suggestions activity sheets and visuals All modules include a list of children's books and websites related to the mathematics topics introduced, a detailed introduction to the Hands-On Mathematics program (guiding principles, implementation guidelines, an overview of the skills that students use and develop during mathematics inquiry), and a classroom assessment plan and record-keeping templates.

About the author

Jennifer Lawson, PhD, is the originator and program editor of the Hands-On series published by Portage & Main Press. Jennifer writes, teaches in the faculty of education at the University of Manitoba, and is a local school board trustee. She is also one of the founders of Mission to Mexico, an organization that works with and provides supports to schools in some of the most impoverished communities in Puerto Vallarta. Jennifer is a former classroom teacher, resource and special education teacher, consultant, and principal. She lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with her husband, Barry, and sons, Devon and Jeremy.
