Description

This pocket sized publication focuses on Frances Stark’s acclaimed My Best Thing, a digital video animation that traces the development of two sexual encounters which progress into conversations about film, literature, art, collaboration and subjectivity.

British curator Mark Godfrey examines the complexity of the work through an in-depth essay that considers Stark’s use of online sex-chat rooms as vehicles for her creative process. My Best Thing unfolds to reveal exchanges filled with poignancy and humour. As Godfrey states, “strangers meet, communicate, share ideas rather than brand preferences, and change how each one sees the world.”

Also includes a forward by CAG Director Nigel Prince and Banff Centre Visual Arts Director Kitty Scott and a postscript by CAG Curator Jenifer Papararo.

This book is co-published by the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver; Walter Philips Gallery, Banff Centre and Koenig Books, London on the occasion of the exhibition My Best Thing at Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff Centre, from September 24 to December 11, 2011 and at the Contemporary Art Gallery, Feb3 to April 15, 2012.
