Description
Maybe you’ve never thought about it, but you are constantly communicating, and with more than just words. Body language, hand gestures, facial expressions — they all have a lot to say. Are you aware of the silent signals you may be sending? How do you read verbal and nonverbal cues from other people?
Through this illustrated book, you will learn how to communicate effectively — virtually and in person — with more confidence and fewer misunderstandings. You’ll learn about active listening, speaking skills, empathy, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and more!
Then you’ll put your newfound knowledge into practice through individual exercises and group activities that will help you master your communication superpowers!
About the authors
Natalie Hyde writes fiction and non-fiction for middle-grade and young adult readers. Her fiction titles include Mine!, Saving Armpit, I Owe You One and Hockey Girl. She is also the author of over forty educational non-fiction books, as well as trade non-fiction titles: Cryptic Canada, Glow-in-the-Dark Creatures and Stay Strong: A Musician’s Journey from Congo to Canada. Her books have garnered award nominations in both Canada and the U.S. She lives in Flamborough, Ontario, with her family.
Valerie Sherrard first decided to become an author when she was in grade six! Her homeroom teacher that year, Mr. Alf Lower, praised and encouraged her efforts and instilled in her a lifelong belief in her ability to write. After producing about a dozen books for teens, Sherrard turned her hand to picture books. There’s a COW Under My Bed! introduces Oscar Ollie Brown, who will be embarking on his second adventure in There’s a Goldfish in my Shoe! in the fall of 2009. Since becoming a published author, Sherrard has enjoyed visiting many classrooms and libraries to speak to young people about writing, literacy, and most of all, finding and following your dreams. Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Valerie has spent time in a number of provinces, including her current home of New Brunswick. She lives in Miramichi with her husband Brent and their four cats: Lilly, Thragg, Patootie and Cody.

Editorial Reviews
“More than Words offers great advice to increase self-awareness, engagement both in-person and online ... sets the reader up for success.”
Quill & Quire
“Sherrard and Hyde capture the attention of readers with true stories from history about communication failures, including the story of the call for help from the Titanic. … The subject matter is quite current as an entire chapter is dedicated to special challenges in getting messages across through digital means, including discussion of social media and video conferencing. … This book is recommended for public and school library collections.”
Krista Jorgensen, Canadian Children’s Book News
“Communication techniques and tips can be very dry, but More than Words: Navigating the Complex World of Communication takes the complex topic, breaks it down into digestible chunks, and delivers an informative, fun read.”
