Moe Norman had the perfect swing and George Knudson was Canada's first great golfer, but Mike Weir is, quite simply, the most successful golfer Canada has ever produced. Winner of seven PGA tour events in the last six years, he is the only Canadian to win a major championship, a feat he accomplished at the 2003 Masters in Augusta, Georgia, beating Len Mattiace in sudden death. Remarkable about that final Sunday was the fact that Weir played the last 18 holes without a bogey, the first winner to do so in nearly half a century.
Weir has also played in two Presidents Cup events, and the Ryder Cup--the most prestigious international tournament in golf. The native of Bright's Grove, Ontario has won more money on the PGA Tour than any Canadian--some $15 million and counting--and in 2004 he came within one stroke of becoming the first native to win the Canadian Open in more than half a century.
Mike Weir: Golf Master, traces the life and times of the golfer, from his childhood in small-town Ontario to his rise to the top of the golfing world. Although he is famous today, Weir played in obscurity for many years, with a career that began anonymously in 1992 and continued so until the year 2000 when he won his first Tour event. He endured the rigours of Q-school, the anguish of playing on the Canadian and nationwide Tour (living out of his car many weeks a year), and, finally, he experienced the glory of playing against the world's best every week.
Today, Weir is entering the prime years and as the President's Cup comes to Canada for the first time in September 2007, he will be counted on by the international team to help secure victory.
