This exhibition represents two significant works by the artist: Garden, 2005 and Archipelago, 2008. The garden image is perhaps the oldest of poetical metaphors in literature and art. The garden is associated with the source of life as well as its growth, and it is the home of life in human hands. In the garden, nature is made over by human imagination and hand: natura naturata, both for good and bad. Archipelago, the word is loaded with implication...a roiling container of nature's countless possibilities and fullness yet containing...damaging evidence of human incursions. The artist, through this work in the exhibition, brings us to a right and elemental meditationon the primeval problem of our relationship with nature. Virginia Eichhorn is the director and curator of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. From 2004 to 2009, she was curator of the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo, Ontario. As an independent curator, she has presented Canadian exhibitions worldwide, including at the XII Biennale of Art at Vila Nova de Cerveira in Portugal. She has written numerous catalogue essays and has contributed to art magazines such as Border Crossings, Canadian Art, and ESPACE Sculpture.
