Description
In the summer of 1788, Alexis has taken to the sea once again, this time on a merchant ship travelling between Halifax and the West Indies. During a stopover in New Orleans, he happens upon Captain Gomez, whom he met two years ago in California. Captain Gomez hires Alexis to manage his farm, where Alexis finds Hugh and Marie, friends from his West coast adventures. He also meets Emma, a young slave with many hidden talents. His stay at the farm will not be restful, however. A powerful man from the region goes after Manon, the pretty daughter of a collector whom Alexis met in Santo Domingo. Her brother Louis asks the young Acadian to hide her at the farm while he organizes her escape. Meanwhile, Alexis debates his plans for the future and is haunted by the vision of a blue eye enclosed by white lids.
