Description

J.C. Heywood: A Life in Layers demonstrates the Burnaby Art Gallery's ongoing commitment to senior Canadian artists and their work. Since its inception in 1967, the gallery has created opportunities for professional artists to exhibit their work and participate in a critical dialogue about art through the publication of catalogues and artist monographs. This important book chronicles Heywood's evolution as a Canadian visual artist who has chosen to express himself by making art on paper. His prints, whether they are executed through the processes associated with etching, lithography, screen, or digital means, provide an opportunity for discourse in relation to their origin, relationship to one another, and the process in which the artist has chosen to execute his work. Through the texts of guest essayist Linda Beatty and Geraldine Davis, in combination with images of work created by Heywood, a portrait of the artist emerges that seeks to engage the reader and offer a unique perspective on this artist who has been creating art for over four decades. Beatty has chosen to examine Heywood's art and his career through his life experiences. This practical approach provides inimitable opportunities whereby art is the reflection and culmination of the artist's life. Davis chose to explore Heywood's work though personal one-to-one interviews. The result is candid, insightful dialogue that illuminates not only artistic experience but approaches to media and their compatibility to the execution of ideas.
