Description

One of the greatest actors to tread the hallowed boards of the Stratford Festival and many other stages across Canada, William Hutt lived a full life as a successful theatre professional beginning at a time when such a career wasn't even dreamed of. Born into a prosperous Toronto family, Hutt attended both Vaughn Road and North Toronto collegiate institutes where he was an adequate student. He did not find his calling until he attended Trinity College, after serving in the Second World War. It was of course while a student in Toronto that he became involved in the theatre at Trinity and Hart House. The arc of Hutt's rising star charts the development of theatre and all the arts in Canada. The particulars of his life - which he seems to have gone through, something like Noël Coward, with a large martini glass in hand - touch on friendships and working relationships with many of Canada's leading artists of the second half of the Twentieth Century.
