Dreamline
In Dreamline, Lissa Foster, a dream-come-true who can cross into and manipulate the dream world, fights to save Grantmere, Alberta, from the wulfdraigles — an ancient race trying to escape from the dream world to feed upon humanity’s fears and nightmares. Along with Mitch Kincaid, the new boy in town and also a dream-come-true, Lissa confronts violence, death, her enemy’s cunning and lust for power, and her status as the misunderstood outcast at her high school. She discovers both a strong will to protect and sacrifice for others and, at last, friends with whom she can share the secret of her ability that she keeps hidden from nearly everyone else. The highlights of Dreamline are Lissa’s distinct and engaging voice, the well-developed and intriguing dream world and the assured and compelling plot. “I’d decided years ago that I could either have secrets or friends, but not both,” says Lissa, which encourages us to identify with her because of how this choice marginalizes and isolates her, constraining her to a life of being profoundly misunderstood by her peers. Yet such a choice also lies at the core of her strong sense of self and her heroic nature, which give real substance and energy to the story.
What lends the story its power and interest is Luiken’s sensitivity to the loneliness Lissa experiences and the courage she needs to overcome it, slowly and tentatively. For Lissa, this means becoming as adept at negotiating the real world as she is as at manipulating the dream world.
