Librarian Reviews

Discover Space

Kids Can Press has been publishing books about science since the early 1980s. It has combined two of its great science books with its burgeoning Kids Can Read series of beginner readers to produce these two new titles about outer space. Each book is an adaptation of an earlier title, Exploring Space and The Planets, re-written to conform to Level 3: Kids Can Read Alone in their early reading series. Exploring Space and The Planets were fun and informative, and these simpler versions are successful in retaining the charm and interest of the originals. Each book includes basic information, simply and effectively presented. The writing is informative and fluid even with the limited text and vocabulary. Discover Space covers the solar system, galaxy, space travel, moon exploration and exploring outside of our solar system. Discover the Planets has a chapter on each of the planets, including Earth, and a general description of the solar system. There are lots of colour and black and white photographs along with Bill Slavin’s cheerful illustrations. Both titles are nicely designed in the traditional easy-to-read format. Each book includes a table of contents.
