Description

Experience life as a park warden in Canada's national parks with Close Calls on High Walls, a moving memoir from a former warden.

The mountains beckon from behind their mantle of clouds.... So pick up your pack and take the Alpenstock in hand. Who knows, in one of those quiet valleys we may even find those candle-flame blazes, where that old Guardian wandered so many years ago.

Close Calls on High Walls captures the stories of park wardens with passion, insight and humour.

His career as a warden with the Canadian Parks Service took him from one end of the country to the other: from Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, New Brunswick and Ontario to Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Difficult to read

This might have been a good book but it feels like it was not edited: weird present tense that lapses into past tense from time to time; the overall storyline is weakly stitched together; and the first-person third-party transitions ... it feels like it was assembled from odds and ends. It could have saved if the central character came through in some remarkable way but he seems mainly a grumpy company man.
