Chasing a Star

September of 1951 is an emotionally tumultuous time for twelve-year-old Sophie La Grange with the excitement of her beloved Aunties’ visit from Montreal, the worry of having to attend a new high school, the thrill of riding on her oldest brother’s new motorcycle and the anger she feels towards the members of a local motorcycle gang who are bullying her brother. When she finds out that her idol, “Canada’s Sweetheart” and Olympic gold medal figure skater, Barbara Ann Scott, is in town to perform in the Hollywood Ice Review, news that their family cannot afford tickets to the show does not deter Sophie from finding a way to meet her figure skating heroine. A short history of Barbara Ann Scott’s accomplishments and photographs of the star are included.

Charles is the recipient of the Moonbeam Bronze Medal Award for her novel The Girl in the Back Seat, second prize, Chocolate Lily Award, for Boxcar Kid and winner for All the Way to Mexico.
