Wang Chin-Yun, a Buddhist nun now known as Venerable Master Cheng Yen, was born in central Taiwan in 1937. At the age of 29, she established the Tzu Chi Foundation, an organization committed to compassion and relief that now numbers 10 million volunteer members in more than 40 countries.

About the author
Gary Ho is a property developer and the CEO of the Canadian chapter of the Tzu Chi Foundation, which he established in 1992. Before immigrating to Canada, he was a successful real estate developer in Taiwan. He divides his time between Vancouver and Taipei. Tzu Chi Foundation Canada now has six branches, over 13,000 members and 1,000 regular volunteers. The Vancouver chapter raises close to half a million dollars every year for charitable causes, including local hospitals, help for the homeless and various school boards.
