Description
This book's common theme is the character and significance of the politics and processes that underlie policy-making on the environment. The first section focuses on government, particularly the current complex constitutional and legislative framework; policy processes in the federalbureaucracy and Cabinet; and the roles played by environmental advisory groups, federal-provincial relations, and the courts. The second part explores the impact of pressure groups, the responses of the party system, and shifts in public opinion and values. Two chapters examine the rise of aCanadian environmental industry, and the ways in which the news media deal with environmental issues and movements. Finally, it considers the international context of policy and Canadian approaches to multilateral developments, and assesses Canadian environmental policy performance.

'This is an excellent survey of environmental politics and policy in Canada. It is both well-organized and clearly written ... Robert Boardman is to be congratulated as the editor of a fine collection of essays on a fashionable subject in an unfashionable country.'Political Studies
...the book contains a wealth of information on environmental policy and practice and does not duplicate other books on the environment. Geographers interested in Canadian environmental issues will find a number of essays of interest in this collection. The Canadian Geographer
'This is a fascinating case history of the development and varying importance of environmental issues on the Canadian political agenda ... The book deserves an international audience - it is unlikely whether many other industrialised countries would come out favourably under this sort ofscrutiny.'The International Journal of Environmental Studies
